Community Coalitions
Brightline helps underserved communities build coalitions that elevate their voices and increase their influence in policy and the economy. We also build policy coalitions across the state and country, bringing together policy-makers at various levels of government to hear the perspectives of underserved communities as they develop plans for environmental protection and economic growth.
Brightline’s recent coalition-building efforts include work with:
OFFSHORE WIND NOW
SRO TENANT LEADERSHIP
LA VOZ LATINA LEADERSHIP
Offshore Wind Now
Offshore wind holds the potential to improve the health of frontline communities, create local jobs, and help meet renewable energy goals.
Brightline is a key organization in Offshore Wind Now, a coalition of environmental, labor, and environmental justice organizations working to fulfill the exciting potential of offshore wind as new, clean energy source for California.
Learn more about Brightline’s work and offshore wind in our report, California Offshore Wind: Winding up for Economic Growth and Environmental Equity.
SRO Tenant Leadership
Single Room Occupancy (SRO) buildings in San Francisco are some of the densest and poorest urban living conditions across the nation. Entire families often live in rooms as small as 8 by 10 feet with shared bathrooms and kitchens.
Brightline builds coalitions of SRO tenants and service organizations to tackle environmental justice concerns including air pollution, health code violations, housing age, urban heat islands, and food insecurity issues.
With the support of our Tenderloin community partners, Central City SRO Collaborative (CCSROC) and La Voz Latina, Brightline published a report highlighting the indoor and outdoor air quality concerns and challenges residents face in Eastern San Francisco. Learn more about Brightline’s work and the air quality concerns of SRO tenants in our report, Little Room to Breathe: Evaluating Air Quality & Health Impacts in San Francisco’s SRO Buildings.
La Voz Latina
With the support of the Bay Area Air District, Brightline teamed up with La Voz Latina to develop thoughtful air quality information and resources for Spanish-speaking residents in the Tenderloin. La Voz Latina is a community organization committed to supporting low-income, monolingual Spanish-speaking immigrants with SRO housing assistance, immigration information and advocacy, Spanish interpretation, public safety, and leadership and skill development.
Through the adult air quality programming, Brightline, La Voz, and CCSROC have successfully reached 600 people through air purifier distributions, in-language air quality and governance workshops, particularly for SRO residents or people with chronic respiratory conditions.
