Offshore wind power on the ocean at sunset

Californians are already paying some of the highest energy bills in the country, and communities were promised more affordable energy, jobs, cleaner air, and billions in economic investment through offshore wind.

Now, some developers are walking away after accepting federal deals tied to fossil fuel expansion.

Workers prepared for new industries. Ports upgraded infrastructure. Tribal Nations and frontline communities spent years helping plan California’s offshore wind future — only to watch politics and backroom deals threaten to dismantle it.

According to recent reporting, California officials have already launched investigations into these offshore wind deals.

Taxpayer money should build California’s clean energy future — not destroy it.

  • To Governor Newsom and the California Energy Commission,

I am writing to urge you to fight for California's offshore wind future and for the communities who were promised it.

Californians are already paying some of the highest energy bills in the country. Our communities were promised more affordable energy, jobs, cleaner air, and billions in economic investment through offshore wind. The Trump administration should not be allowed to pay offshore wind companies to walk away from California and invest in fossil fuels instead. Our workers prepared for new careers, port communities adapted their infrastructure, and frontline families spent years in planning processes because they believed in this state's clean energy commitments.

We are asking you to fight back with everything California has.

The California Energy Commission has already taken the first step to investigate these deals fully and make the findings public. California should also pursue every legal avenue available by holding developers accountable to the commitments they made. A lawsuit would make clear to the Trump administration and to the companies that took this deal that California's clean energy future is not for sale.

    Sincerely,
    [Signers]
