Location/Schedule: Hybrid, in office at least once per week
About the Position: Brightline’s Legal Corps program is a network of attorneys and law students that contribute to Brightline’s environmental justice and policy initiatives that promote sustainability and opportunity for frontline communities. Participants have the option to provide legal support on a reduced rate or pro bono basis on a project-by-project basis while gaining valuable experience. The program is designed to adapt to a changing environmental legal landscape and the diverse communities we serve. This position supports all aspects of the Legal Corps program under the direction of Special Counsel and also supports efforts of the Brightline team, including the Policy team, in advancing the work in support of their mission. The Legal Corps Administrator helps coordinate the program by ensuring communication between Brightline’s internal staff, supporting Legal Corps participants, and completing administrative tasks (e.g., assisting with onboarding, maintaining program documentation, tracking and presenting program metrics, and assisting with project completion tasks as needed).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Legal Corps Program Administration (60%)
Monitor and maintain Legal Corps portal and intake forms, and assist Special Counsel and Executive Director with applicant review and onboarding.
Manage Legal Corps Project Tracker and timesheets for each Legal Corps member.
Maintain and update Legal Corps files, handbooks, and other program documents.
Report Legal Corps project updates and overall program metrics.
Meet with Special Counsel weekly.
Support of the Legal Corps Fellowship program designed for providing law students with experience in environmental advocacy.
Team Project Support (35%)
Collaborate with Brightline’s Special Counsel and Executive Director on legal proceedings and other regulatory matters.
Act as the Legal Corps liaison to Brightline’s Policy and Air Quality teams to ensure effective communication and assist with identifying opportunities for collaboration.
Join recurring Brightline Policy Team meetings when requested
Provide suggestions on potential Legal Corps assignments based on Brightline’s policy and air quality engagements
Research, analyze, and draft reports, recommendations, and memorandums to support Brightline as needed. Topics that the Legal Corps Administrator may work on include but are not limited to:
Clean energy and transmission development regionally and in CA
Air quality monitoring and improvements
Equitable offshore wind and other renewable development
CalEnviroScreen and other EJ mapping tools
Perform administrative legal tasks under the supervision of Special Counsel, including preliminary research, proofreading, footnoting, submissions and filings, and other tasks.
Additional Duties (5%)
Attend Policy team and other meetings as needed
Other duties as needed.
Core Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of education and experience
1-2 years of related experience
Capacity and desire to work with diverse communities and neighborhoods in San Francisco.
Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
Creative, strategic, and analytical thinker with the ability to take initiative and manage multiple projects.
Highly organized, strong attention to detail, and ability to work with a high degree of confidentiality.
Able to collaborate and work well with others.
Experience with a community-based organization.
Ability to work with a variety of populations, including community leaders, government, and non-profit partners.
